Eni announced on Monday 19 October the completion of the Bouri gas recovery project, off western Libya, with start-up procedures under way. The Libyan national oil company NOC expects the project to come into service by the end of October.
The facility is designed to recover and process gas associated with oil extraction, which had until now been burned off at the flare. Around 700 million standard cubic metres more per year are expected, according to Eni, notably to meet the needs of power plants on the Libyan market.
Developed by Mellitah Oil & Gas, the joint venture of Eni and the NOC, the project includes a new recovery module and connection infrastructure. These facilities are meant to make use of a resource previously lost during oil production.
The two partners estimate that the project will cut emissions by around 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ a year. This is an expected effect following start-up. Eni also says the operation will be able to support gas volumes available for export to Europe via the GreenStream pipeline.
