Cape Verde will from Tuesday 20 October apply a 10% reduction in the price of special diesel for semi-industrial and industrial fishing, for three months. Published on Monday in the Official Bulletin, the resolution reserves this aid for vessels in operation, duly registered and holding a valid fishing licence.

The government wants to ease the rise in the costs of going to sea and to support the continuity of activity. In the text, it states that the price of marine diesel rose from 78.20 to 153.30 escudos per litre between January and October 2026, an increase of about 96%.

The Autonomous Fisheries Fund will cover 10% of the price in force each month, with shipowners paying the remaining 90%. The compensation will be paid directly to the companies supplying the fuel, based on the volumes actually delivered to the vessels concerned.

Article 3 of the resolution sets the overall funding ceiling at 5.07 million escudos. Suppliers will have to produce proof of delivery, and payments will be made once the fund has validated the documents.

The executive considers that shipowners cannot pass on all their extra costs to the price of fish without raising prices excessively for consumers. The scheme will be monitored with the Multisectoral Economic Regulation Agency and will be assessed monthly for its effects and the credits used.
