The Ministerial Committee of the Central African Monetary Union (UMAC) adopted a regulation on the demonetisation of five old coin series on 7 October 2026 in N'Djamena, according to its official communiqué. The decision follows the proposal approved two days earlier by the BEAC Board of Directors.
The series concerned were put into circulation in 1958, 1959, 1971, 1976 and 1985. The Board of Directors' communiqué presents their withdrawal as a means of simplifying monetary circulation and strengthening the use of coins from recent series.
The measure covers the six countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa: Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Chad.
The BEAC put its Type 2024 series into circulation on 7 April 2025. Its launch communiqué presented it as a response to a shortage of coins for everyday transactions. The series includes, notably, a new 200 FCFA denomination, which joins the other coins.
