The Tunisian government proposes raising the tax on trips abroad from 60 to 80 dinars in its draft finance bill for 2027, made public on 15 October. The provision appears in article 24 of the text, which is still subject to adoption.
For liable travellers, the levy would therefore rise by 20 dinars per trip, or 33.3%. The rate of 60 dinars remains displayed on the official electronic stamp portal of the Ministry of Finance. Article 70 of the bill sets the general application of the measures from 1 January 2027, unless otherwise provided.
The tax applies to residents of Tunisia, regardless of nationality, when they travel abroad by air or sea, according to the legislation that introduced it. Exemptions exist, notably for travel to Arab Maghreb Union countries and certain categories of travellers.
Workers taking up a job abroad for the first time under organised migration may in particular benefit from an exemption, subject to conditions. This may also cover their spouse and children who accompany or join them.
The proposed increase is part of measures aimed at strengthening the resources of the diversification of social security sources account. The same article provides for raising the rate of the tax on games and competitions from 40% to 60%.
