Annual inflation in Sudan reached 28.29% in September, compared with 26.14% in August, according to figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics published on 21 October.

Food and beverage prices rose 36.81% year on year. This increase, higher than the overall index, directly adds to household running costs.

Pressure is markedly stronger in cities. Urban inflation rose to 40.35%, from 38.05% in August, while the rural rate increased from 19.26% to 21.18%.

The statistics bureau calculates the index using a basket of 663 goods and services grouped into twelve categories. It recorded price increases in most items, notably housing, health, transport and clothing, in an economy strained by war and shrinking incomes.
