Uganda inaugurated the rebuilt Katonga bridge on the Kampala-Masaka road in Mpigi district on Saturday, 17 October. Minister of Works and Transport Fred Byamukama presided over the ceremony, according to the Daily Monitor's report.
The daily puts the project at 191 billion Ugandan shillings and says it was carried out by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC). The structure was raised to reduce its exposure to flooding, the paper reports.
The crossing serves a route linking Kampala to the south-west of the country. After floods in May 2023 destroyed the old bridge, heavy vehicles were redirected to the Mpigi-Sembabule-Masaka road, according to a report by the Ugandan Parliament.
In July 2024, the government told MPs that construction of the new structure would begin in October of the same year, after studies of the river's behaviour.
