The dollar trades above 53 pounds in Egyptian banks on Wednesday, October 14, according to rates posted by Banque Misr and quotes reported by the daily Al Masry Al Youm.
Banque Misr posts 53.05 pounds to buy and 53.15 pounds to sell in its table updated at 16 h 29. These rates are identical for banknotes and transfers. The former is the price at which the bank buys dollars, the latter the price at which it sells them.
At the posted selling rate, buying 100,000 dollars thus amounts to 5.315 million pounds, before any fees. For a beneficiary handing 1,000 dollars to the bank, the buying rate represents 53,050 pounds, also before fees.
Banking expert Mohamed Abdel Aal attributes the recent tensions to increased demand for foreign currency for imports, in statements to Al Masry Al Youm. He notably cites needs related to transport, insurance and energy, as well as precautionary purchases prompted by regional tensions.
Foreign currency inflows from expatriates have nonetheless continued to rise. According to Central Bank figures announced on October 13 and relayed by the State Information Service, their transfers reached 33.9 billion dollars from January to August 2026, compared with 26.6 billion over the same period of 2025, a rise of 27.2%.
For August alone, these transfers amounted to about 4.2 billion dollars, up 21.7% year on year.
