Malawi Stock Exchange market capitalisation fell 15.5% in one year to MWK 27.04 trillion on 22 October 2026, from MWK 32 trillion on the same date in 2025, according to market reports analysed by Nation Online.

The Malawi All Share Index declined 17.9% over the same period to 485,486.63 points from 591,103.33. It slipped another 0.03% in the 22 October session, with no gainers and six decliners, according to Malawi Stock Exchange data cross-checked by Mansa Markets.

The contraction represents a MWK 4.96 trillion reduction in quoted value. It is not an equivalent outflow of cash, but it lowers the value of investor portfolios. A loss is realised only when securities are sold.

The pension sector had already recorded MWK 571.6 billion in unrealised equity losses in the first half of 2026, according to a Reserve Bank of Malawi financial stability report cited by Nation Online. Pension fund assets fell 2% to MWK 7.8 trillion.

Listed shares still accounted for 75.9% of pension fund investment assets at the end of June, above the 60% regulatory ceiling. The concentration leaves retirement savings more exposed to market movements and complicates sales when liquidity is limited.

Frank Harawa, secretary general of the minority shareholders association Misalico, also cited uncertainty over domestic debt restructuring and a 2% tax on gross proceeds from share sales. The levy can apply even when investors sell below their purchase price. Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha declined to comment on a possible review of the measures before the mid-year budget, Nation Online reported.

The decline reverses part of the 248% gain recorded by the Malawian market in 2025. The MASI remains 18.8% below its peak of 598,062.80 points reached at the end of that year.
