Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, announced on Tuesday 20 October an audit of meters across all its distribution areas in Ghana, in order to tackle electricity theft and reduce its commercial losses. The distributor said the checks would begin shortly.
The operation will cover prepaid and postpaid meters, installations subject to the large-consumer tariff, and the associated wiring. ECG wants to verify the reliability of the equipment and the accuracy of billed consumption.
In its public notice, the company states that it will not send any further individual letters before the visits. It asks customers, property owners and building managers to grant access to its teams, subject to verification of their identity.
Authorised agents and contractors must present an official card. Subscribers can dial *226#, choose option 5, then enter the six-digit code provided by the agent. The service will display the agent's name, region and district, to be compared with the information presented on site.
ECG also directs users to its call centre on 0302 611,611 to verify the identity of personnel before granting them access to the installations.
