Cameroon and the Islamic Development Bank signed an agreement on 13 October in Bangkok for 212.35 million euros, or about FCFA 139.2 billion, to rehabilitate the Douala-Bafoussam road.
The project covers 218 km of national roads and 108 km of feeder roads, according to the Islamic Development Bank. It is intended to connect the Littoral and West regions more efficiently and also includes work on classrooms, health centres, water points, markets and agricultural facilities.
The two signatories present the investment as a way to reduce transport costs and make it easier to move goods to domestic markets and the port of Douala. The Cameroonian government also considers that the road can improve the movement of agricultural products from the western production basins and trade with neighbouring countries.
The agreement was signed by Cameroonian Minister of the Economy Alamine Ousmane Mey and Muhammad Al Jasser, President of the Islamic Development Bank Group. It follows the bank's approval of the financing at its annual meeting held in Algiers in May 2025.
The Cameroonian president had authorised the signature by a decree dated 2 October 2026. The text describes the arrangement as an instalment sale agreement, without detailing its cost or repayment schedule.
A general procurement notice had been published in October 2025. The start date of the works has yet to be announced.
